What Makes a Shake a Formulated Meal Replacement?

A formulated meal replacement is a food specifically formulated to replace one or more meals of the day, but not the whole diet. In Australia and New Zealand, this is a defined category under Food Standards Code Standard 2.9.3. A drink does not become a meal replacement just because it is high in protein or comes in a shaker.

How can you recognise a formulated meal replacement?

Start with the product's exact label. Look for its stated purpose, full serving size, preparation directions, nutrition information and required warnings. Compare nutrition on the basis of the serving you will actually prepare; adding milk or other ingredients can change the final values.

Meal replacement, protein powder or smoothie?

  • Formulated meal replacement: made and labelled for replacing an individual meal as directed.
  • Protein powder: mainly chosen to add protein; high protein alone does not establish that it is suitable as a meal replacement.
  • Homemade smoothie: nutrition depends on its ingredients and amounts, and the name alone does not tell you whether it provides an appropriate meal.

Can it replace every meal?

No. The formulated meal replacement category is distinct from a total diet replacement. Follow the specific product's directions and keep the rest of your diet varied. Seek individual advice from a dietitian or clinician if you have a medical condition, are pregnant or need a prescribed eating plan.

What should you compare when shopping?

Read the per-serve nutrition panel, ingredients, allergens and directions for each flavour. Then consider format and taste: a jar may suit a regular routine, while a sachet may be easier to carry. Browse Daily Shake meal replacements or see our guide to reading a shake nutrition panel.
